The light facade as a design element

Every building communicates with its form and impression. Light facades open up new possibilities for interaction in the style of the 21st century. Light installations bring objects to life and interact with the emotions of the observer.

LED facades turn a building into a medium. The challenge that architects and planners face is merging architecture and media facades into a single unit. In opposing interrelation, the building presents the communication surface while the media display of the facade emphasizes the architecture.

A light facade can be realized with direct or indirect lighting and a fundamental decision must be made in this regard at the beginning of the planning process. Here you'll find examples of the two variations.

The variations are divided into:
Direct Lighting   /   Indirect Lighting

In Altensteig (near Stuttgart, Germany) a 1500sqm facade will be installed soon. About 7000 high-power Led´s are used for this, using indirect lighting techniques for the facade. As a "First Time", the new "Duo-Line" led line will used, which has power supply and control integrated on board.

LEDs take the stage at Ars Electronica Center

The Ars Electronica Center (AEC) in Linz has been wrapped with one of Europe's largest light facades since January 1, 2009. 40,000 LEDs illuminate over 1,100 glass panels comprising the 5,000 m² building shell. The quick reaction of each individual light diode optimally transforms into a dance of flowing movements and color gradients. With this LED facade, AEC offers artists from around the world a unique platform of communication. [more]
